I.- MERIDIAN
565 7.1
-
In 1997 Meridian claimed that this processor, when
DVD Forum approved MPEG as official format for DVD players, could
play Dolby Digital, MPEG and DTS.
-
But my unit of 565 7.1:
-
It
didn't play MPEG in any way. After two years
(1997 and 1998) asking Meridian managers where was MEPG in my 565
7.1 machine, Meridian recognized that the processor didn't have MPEG
chipset. The fault, Meridian said, was of Philips because this European
company had sent MPEG chipset to Meridian late (with a lot of delay).
-
It
didn't play DTS in any way: this
format appeared later in Europe (Zone 2) with regard to USA.
-
It
didn't often play Dolby Digital (AC-3) with Sony DVD players:
this event was impossible according to Chemison (Meridian Spanish
distributor). To show Chemison that my 565 7.1 processor didn't play
Dolby Digital, this customer travelled from Madrid to Barcelona (over
600 kms) with Meridian processor and Sony DVD player into my own car.
When Chemison people verified that Dolby Digital AC-3 wasn't available
with Meridian 565 7.1 and Sony DVD player his face turned pale and
first Mr. Lafarga said that fault was in Sony DVD player and its bitstream.
Then Mr Iniesta said that customer had to buy a Meridian 861 if he
wanted all features and performances aforementioned.
-
It
often made an ugly noise when a DVD disc with Dolby Digital was played:
a dangerous and unforeseeable noise for power amplifiers and loudspeakers.
II.-
MERIDIAN 561
-
It
didn't play MPEG properly: subwoofer channel wasn't available under
this format. This malfunction was tested and
verified with several DVD discs with MPEG sound. These discs were
tested with other processors and DVD players, in home cinema shops,
etc. Even Hollywood companies were requested about if films on DVDs
with MPEG sound had any fault in subwoofer channel. Only with Meridian
processor there wasn't subwoofer channel sound under MPEG. Meridian
didn't say any word about this malfunction.
-
Owners of Meridian 561 processors: are you sure
MPEG subwoofer channel in your machines does sound properly?.
III.-
MERIDIAN 861 (S/N 100803)
-
It played
an ugly and dangerous noise for amplification and loudspeakers when
DVD player tray was opened after
Meridian Marketing Manager Mr. Andrew Samalionis finished to install
this machine at customer home. A Grieg's CD was playing
to test Meridian 861 configuration was OK, when stop and open tray
bottons Pioneer DVD player were pressed in order to test system with
a DVD disc a terrible noise made Mr. Andrew Samalionis face to blush
like a tomato.
- Saturation in signal and sound with
Harman Kardon tuner as source partner.
Meridian recognized the fault in this 18.000€ machine and sent
a new one to customer.
IV.-
MERIDIAN 861 (S/N 100843)
-
This new
861 beast didn't play any noise but it turned off/on by itself at
any moment. It blocked its own buttons and the processor didn't work
in any way. Meridian Marketing Manager said "I
am really sorry that we have managed to replace a problem with another.
I am sure from your description that is a fault with the machine".
This machine cost over 18.000€ and Meridian do nothing to solve
the problem.
-
Why doesn't Meridian
do nothing to solve the problem? Because its Spanish distributor Chemison
and Spanish dealer Clave Audio want to
put customer in jail in vain.
ABOUT MERIDIAN PROCESSORS:
-
Failures and malfunctions aforementioned in the
machines were tested and confirmed by Acoustic Institute.
-
There isn't any problem in home cinema room of
customer. Other processors 20 times cheaper and other DVD players
work properly in this room with good acoustics and no electrical disturbances.
For more accuracy, Meridian processors were tested in and out of my
home cinema room.
-
Real high-end mains and conditioners, interconnects
and video cables of brands like Van den Hul, Nordost, Cardas, Kimber
Reference, LAT International, etc were fited up this home cinema system.
-
Several updates for this system along these winding
7 years: a better DVD player (not any more Pioneer), better power
amps, better ProAc loudspeakers and better Rel subwoofer were fited
up my system. But Meridian
processors continue with fatal failures.

To sum
up:
At the left: Meridian
consumer state after 7 years.
At the right: the
thought after that state.
